What’s the advantage of learning French in Crans-Montana, Switzerland?
Crans-Montana is located in the French-speaking region of the Swiss Alps, approximately two hours from Geneva and three hours from Zurich. It is beautiful in both summer and winter and very safe. It has a Mediterranean-like climate, spectacular panoramic 360 degree views, superb sporting facilities and numerous cultural attractions. Its breathtaking scenery is inspirational and the relaxed lifestyle is conducive to learning.

What are the benefits of learning French combined with other activities?

It would be too onerous to undertake the eight hours of tuition in a structured setting. We find that participants prefer four-hours of formal learning in the morning (with a tea/coffee break), which is complemented by four-hours of cultural and sporting activities in the afternoon. The informal activities give participants the opportunity to practice and reinforce the formal lessons.

Are the informal activities conducted in French?

Yes, they are. Much depends upon the level of the course. The vocabulary and themes covered in the morning sessions will be related to the afternoon activity. In some cases there may be a need for translation.

If I am learning French in Switzerland, what type of accent will I have?
The French spoken in French-speaking Switzerland is the same as French spoken in France. It is not a dialect. However, there are slight differences. The relatively slower diction in Switzerland makes it slightly easier for students to learn French. Our teachers, who are experienced and have university qualifications, come from both France and Switzerland.

Can I attend classes if I don’t speak a word of French?

Yes, we have courses for the absolute beginner. There are also courses for intermediate and advanced students who are keen to refine their French language skills.

What if I don’t know my exact level?

You will be given a self-assessment checklist prior to the course. In addition, our teachers will meet course participants and confirm the correct level of entry prior to commencement.

What do you mean by “immersion” in French?

We believe that to speak, hear and think in a language all day long, is the best way to learn French. French will be spoken from Day One and participants will learn French in a combination of formal and informal ways. Being exposed to French in different contexts is a more natural way of learning and enhances retention and participation.

Can I bring my family if I want to register in a course?
Of course, you can bring family. However, children cannot participate in the courses. We can make special accommodation arrangements for your family and organize childcare. There are childcare centres for children from 18 months of age, a kindergarten for three-year olds plus, a mini-club for 6 to 10-year-old children and ski-clubs that provide skiing lessons, childcare and meals for the whole day. Babysitters are also available upon request. Price on application.

What if my spouse or partner already speaks French?

Special allowances may be made in the case where a partner may not wish to participate in the structured core language sessions in the morning, but may wish to be included in the informal afternoon sessions. These circumstances may pertain to couples where the partner is already fluent in French or where business/work commitments preclude a partner staying for the full duration of the course. Availability and price by application.

Are the courses restricted to two or four weeks?

Special arrangements can be negotiated per individual case should participants wish to participate in an irregular course length, i.e. one week, three weeks or more than four weeks.

What level of fitness do you need for the Hiking course?

You need an acceptable level of fitness to enjoy the multitude of hikes around Crans-Montana. This means that you need to be able to walk comfortably for two to three hours. Most walks are accessible and there will be rest points along the way so you can enjoy the spectacular scenery.

What do you need to wear for hiking?
Comfortable clothing, good hiking boots, a fleece and a windproof jacket are all that is needed for a rewarding day of hiking in the Swiss Alps. A hat, sunglasses and sunblock are also essential. Much depends upon the season. If the weather is cool, hikers will need warmer clothing. There are a number of hiking shops that have a range of hiking equipment and clothing.

Do I need to be an expert at Golf or Skiing to participate in the Specialist courses?
As with all courses, there are different levels for the French+Golf and French+Skiing courses. Levels range from beginners to advanced, so you will find a level that suits you.

If I undertake one of the Specialist courses like skiing or golf can I also visit the vineyards?
There is some flexibility on the specialist courses to participate in the general recreational and cultural activities during one afternoon session each week. For example, there will be a wine tasting tour that will introduce you to the customs and practices of viticulture in the Valais, which is Switzerland’s premier wine-growing region.

Which currency will I bring?
It is preferable to bring Swiss Francs (CHF), but you can also use Euros.

What is the night life like in Crans-Montana?
At night, Crans-Montana becomes a vibrant twin village with a colourful night life. There are restaurants, wine bars, discos and dance clubs. Then there’s the Casino Crans-Montana, a cinema, or a selection of quieter night spots such as piano bars that offer a warm and relaxed atmosphere for your aperitifs.
